6. John
17v 6-19
Jesus:
protection and holiness
Can you think
of a memento, gift or keepsake that reminds you of someone special?
Use 1 Timothy
1v17 to direct you praise to God.
Look for
songs/hymns that will help the group to focus on God, you could say
them or sing them.
This is the famous prayer of Jesus
for his disciples. He is praying that by receiving the Word they may go
into the World and be kept safe ‘in’ it. This is a compact passage and
takes a while to understand – but the message will ‘seriously build up
your spiritual health’.
Read John 17v6-19
Read in two versions
and alone.
Questions:
1. What is
Jesus praying for you? Sum it up in 2/3 words. Look up Romans 8v34
to see that Jesus is still praying for us.
2. What
exactly is ‘The World’? What does ‘in, but not of the world’ mean?
How does Jesus protect us?
The word
‘keep from’ or ‘protect’ in verses 11, 12 and 15 appears in several
places in the Bible:
Matthew 27v36 (kept watch NIV);
Acts 12v6 (stood guard NIV)
1 John 5v18 (keep safe NIV)
This is what
Jesus is praying for us.
How does that make you feel?
What are the
dangers that we/you face to compromise (Romans 12v2)? Perhaps the
group could pray for individuals at this point.
3. Jesus left
us the gift of The Sprit (John 16v7,13-15, 28). How does the Spirit
help us pray?
4. What one
thing ‘sticks in your mind’ from this recent series on prayer? Spend
some time sharing this …and praying.
