A heart for Jesus.
Matthew
5v13-16 (Romans 12 v1-2)
- Being
different
- Making a
difference
Thoughts:
Our vision ‘to be a growing church’ includes reaching out into our
community. That will be furthered as we put more resources into our
vision.
What is
the darkest place you have ever been? What did it feel like?
Use a
source of light as a symbol to think about Jesus; torch, match,
candle etc. What do we use these lights for? Find a song or Bible
verses that illustrates Jesus as ‘The Light of the world’
John 9v5.
Respond in prayer and praise.
Jesus
uses two common household pictures to help us live for Him. Light is
needed in dark places when the night has come. Salt is used to preserve
food and make it tasty.
Read Matthew 5v13-16 and Romans 12 v1-2
Questions:
1.Consider
Romans 12. What do you think ‘a living sacrifice’ is? How can you
ensure that you are not squeezed and squashed by the world’s values?
An example would be the use of money.
2. Jesus
described himself as the light of the world … and you and me as the
same. How might we be like one of the light sources we used earlier…
in a dark world?
3.
How is our church seen in our community? Are we ‘salty’? Are we a
beacon of hope’? Imagine how you would like the church to be seen –
what can you do to help our church to be in that place.
4. Which
Christians have had a big influence on your life? How have they been
‘lights’ for you? Where and how are you called to be a ‘light’ for
Jesus?
5. What
have you learnt anew or again over these past few studies? Can you
name something that has connected with you?
Extra Question:
John 15v8. What is ‘a disciple’ today?
Pray that
each of you may be ‘salt and light’ in your daily life. Pray for the
witness of our church.
Challenging question:
Where can I be seen as a Christian? What
is seen?
The cost:
Is being insulted or being ignored
(Matthew 5v11-12).
My response:
Is to Rejoice in Him… and give thanks.
